2 litters born.
I have 2 red females, 2 red male, 2 sesame male puppies available. Dad is an AKC champion. Both parents have had their hips tested to ensure they dont have hip dysplasia, their knees/ checked to ensure they do no pop out of socket, and their eyes tested to ensure they dont have signs of glaucoma. These tests are done to ensure they are not passing these issues on to offspring. I breed in hopes of keeping a puppy as a show prospect. The rest go to pet homes for $3200 and a signed contract to have them spayed/neutered. Due to the large amount of backyard breeders in our breed, I wanted to cover a few important topics to think about when you are purchasing a dog or even considering breeding a dog.
Every dog breed recognized by AKC has a parent club. It is a club for a specific breed of dog, and they decide what the breed standard will be, what health testing should be performed on that specific breed, what the temperament of that specific breed should be, etc. When you are looking to purchase a dog, you should familiarize yourself with what health testing the parent club recommends in an effort to prevent getting a dog prone with these particular issues. For the Shiba Inu, the Shiba Inu Club of America (NSCA) is the parent club.
A breed standard is a written detailed description of what the breed should be. It will detail size, colors, head shape, how the breed should move, and temperament just to name a few. Its basically a written picture on what makes a Shiba. Showing in dog shows is judging a group of dogs to see which one the judge feels best aligns with that breeds written standard. Its not just a beauty contest of whos the prettiest, its about having a dog that fits the standard and has been judged and proven.
Health testing is a series of tests that are recommended for a specific breed by the parent club. These tests check for specific problems that are common in the breed. Health testing is a way a responsible breeder can choose the best dogs to use in their breeding program. Dogs with genetic issues will pass these to the offspring, so a responsible breeder will not breed a dog with bad health test results. While you may just want a pet, will this pet cost you more in fixing health problems later in life?
While it is true the perfect dog doesnt exist, you can cut down on health issues by only breeding fully health tested dogs. For the Shiba Inu, the specific issues we test for are:
* Hip Dysplasia: OFA or PennHIP
(X-ray test of hips by certified vet)
* knee OFA
(Exam by vet)
* Eye exam: OFA
(Preformed by certified eye specialist to ensure no signs of glaucoma)
Many times people are confused and think health testing is just taking your dog in for a normal annual check up at your vet but that is not the case. Once these tests are completed, the breeder will receive a certificate with results. So if a breeder has completed these tests, they will have proof of it. Dont fall for they passed. Ask for proof, ask for specific scores.
Purebred vs Well bred? Purebred just means that a puppy comes from two dogs who are a specific breed. Purebred doesnt speak to the quality of a puppy. When looking for a puppy of a specific breed, purebred is the minimum. A well bred dog is what you should be looking for. A well bred dog is bred with the breed standard and health at the forefront. A good breeder should only breed dogs who fit the standard as close as possible in looks and temperament as well as one who has been fully health tested. They should review pedigrees and make informed decisions about which dogs to pair together. , a lot of people think that a dog having a working reproductive system makes them a candidate to breed. This kind of thinking is what ruins a breed. This introduces medical issues, off standard dogs, temperament issues, and lines the pockets of people who arent putting any of the money back into bettering the breed.
Champion lines? A lot of backyard breeders like to say that their puppies come from champion bloodlines. The phrase champion bloodline is often used by backyard breeders who didnt do any of the work themselves and want to ride off the accolades of past breeders. These people do nothing with their dogs to prove their merit or worthiness to breed but try to sell puppies based on a dog who championed 5 back. The words champion should not be used while selling a puppy unless the puppys parent themselves have earned that title. Just because a dog several back was a great dog means nothing if that same level of didnt follow it down the line.
So if Im looking for a dog just as a pet, why does all this ? Buying a well bred dog accomplishes many things. You will have a dog that has been produced by someone who has researched and planned to produce a litter with purpose in mind. Theyve looked at temperament, , health, and pedigrees on the sire and dam and decided that they complement each other in a way that will produce not just a purebred dog, but a well bred dog. This extra time, money, research, and pride will produce a puppy with a stable mind and body. One who will look like the dog you imagine when you look at Google photos, and acts like the breed is expected to. Can you purchase a puppy cheaper from a breeder who hasnt health test or shown their dogs? Yes, but is it worth it if your puppy can barely walk by two years old or has an unstable and unpredictable temperament? Who do you want to give your money to support? Do you want to give your money to a person who just put two dogs together with no forethought who you will never hear from again if you run into issues down the road, or do you want to support a breeder who is doing everything in their power to better the breed because they have a passion and love for it? A breeder who is there for you for the life of your dog to help you when problems arise and that stands behind their dogs. If you truly love a breed, support a breeder who is preserving it not someone who wanted to make a quick buck. If you want a pet or a breeding/show dog, save your money for the purebred well bred dog you want and expect.
If you truly love a breed and want to start breeding, find a mentor and do the work to do it correctly. This breed already has enough people ruining it with greed and lack of , please dont be another one.
