Things to look for when choosing an ethical and reputable breeder:
1. The Ragdoll is a blue-eyed, pointed cat per the breed written standard. The standard is available on the TICA and CFA's websites. Reputable breeders breed to the written standard, they do not breed mink, sepia, solid or any other mixes. You can get mixes at your local shelter for a lot less money and not support backyard breeding, money hungry greeders and those who hate Ragdolls and want to destroy the breed.
2. Reviews - Google breeder and names and see what comes up.
3. TICA - Purebred ragdoll kittens come registered with a breeder slip at time of pickup. Not later, not with the wrong breeder's name or different parents.
4. Vet check - Must have vet check. Request vet record. At least 2 sets of vaccines. Watch out for antivaxxers.
5. Written contract - Never buy a kitten without a written contract with health guarantee. The longer the health guarantee, the better. Avoid any breeder who ties their health guarantee to some product like LIfe's Abundance or Nuvet. Neither of those things has anything to do with genetic diseases. It's a money grabbing scam.
6.Best Practices: Kitten sent home 12 to 16 weeks, already spayed/neutered, vet checks with at least TWO sets of vaccines, deworming, no parasites or fleas, no upper infections present, healthy weight and clean fur, written contract with a health guarantee, and TICA paper.
7. DNA testing - Kitten's parents must be DNA tested. Request copy of results to make sure no HCM or PKD.
8. Clean and cage free environment with plenty of nutritious food, appropriate healthcare and . The cats should be living with the breeder, not in a barn, cage or some other .
9. Request a live video chat (Skype, Zoom or FaceTime) to make sure your kitten is healthy, active and is living in a hygienic environment. Request to also see the parents.
10. skills - If breeder's skills are bad, they're full of excuses and sound like liars, avoid.
11. Research and speak to many breeders before choosing one. First look thoroughly at multiple websites. All websites should list the breeding kings and queens, preferably with their prefix and date of births and other pertinent . Avoid any breeder with no website. Who knows what kind of kitten mill it might be.
12. In New York, breeders who sell or intend to sell more than 25 cats (cats or kittens) MUST be licensed by the NY Department of Agriculture as a pet dealer and get inspected on an annual basis.
13. Avoid anyone using words such as "rare" or "exotic" or claiming they're retired but selling cats for 6 months plus.
